Under Armour Beginnings

The label is one of the newest in the market, having burst on the scene in 1996 when Kevin Planka former University of Maryland football player brought out a range of performance apparel being gear engineered to keep athletes cool, dry and light throughout a game, practice or workout. The technology behind Under Armour's diverse product assortment for men, women and youths is complex. So it comes as no surprise that they have moved into sports footwear.

Heatgear is the technology seen in all Under Armour's products which improve ventilation and moisture management, keeping the whole body at optimum temperature and now incorporated into their latest design boots. Further, they also incorporate Hydrology System Technology which allows better ventilation and improved moisture management, including in the latest boots. These products help keep the feet dry in even the worst conditions.

Their big break for getting brand recognition started in 1999 with the movie ‘Any Given Sunday,’ starring Al Pacino and Jamie Foxx. Some scenes show the football team wearing UA apparel and accessories.

The brand is aiming to significantly reduce dependency on elastane fabric to provide the stretch in their sportswear materials. This is in line with their principle of improving moisture management and elastane, due to the amount of moisture it can hold, is prone to odour issues and wear-and-tear issues due to increased drying time. UA is also trying to lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the scaling of its 3D samples as opposed to actual physical samples which would require transportation of the said products to their retail partners.

Official Sponsorships

Under Armour sponsors the Welsh national rugby union team. One of their prominent players, fullback Leigh Halfpenny, wears Under Armour boots. He even received back in 2015 a signature colourway of Oxblood red and gold for his UA boots to be worn during the Rugby World Cup held that year. Domestic clubs under their umbrella include the English Premiership’s Worcester Warriors and the French Top 14’s ASM Clermont Auvergne.
