There was plenty to take in when it came to ‘boot spotting’ on the weekend, with the Wellington round of the IRB Sevens circuit putting players from all corners of the globe on display. Of all the boots we noticed over the weekend, perhaps the ones that surprised us the most were the NFL cleats sported by New Zealand’s young star Gillies Kaka.
Kaka brought the gold adiZero boots from American site Eastbay, and had already worn them at first class level for Hawkes Bay in the ITM Cup.
He pulled the striking boots out for his side’s Semi-Final clash with Kenya, but was unable to inspire the home team to victory. After getting out to a 14-nil lead by halftime the New Zealanders were run down by a courageous Kenya in the second spell, with the game going to extra time before the Africans scored the winning try to catapult themselves in to their first ever final in Wellington.
Kaka donned more traditional boots for the Kiwi’s third and fourth place playoff with Samoa, choosing to wear the adidas RS7 IIs which had been a regular choice for many of his team-mates over the weekend.
Kaka shone in that game, scoring a brace of tries as the New Zealanders claimed 3rd spot with a 17-7 win, firmly announcing his arrival on the International Sevens scene in the process.
